Devitrak App Product Design

I led the full design and development of a device-tracking app for large-scale events and company inventories. From research and branding to prototyping and managing development, I built the product end-to-end and launched it successfully at a major conference, along with a marketing site to support its expansion.

Research Process

The research phase was a critical foundation for the app’s success. I started with market research and competitive analysis to understand the landscape and define a unique position for Devitrak. This led to user research, including surveys and interviews with event organizers and staff. I also created user flows to map out the most efficient experience for tracking devices. Leading a focus group provided invaluable real-world feedback. I used ChatGPT to generate ideas, Miro to collaborate on ideas and workflows, Figma for design iterations, and Microsoft Teams for team coordination.

Wireframing and Prototyping

Once the research and branding were in place, I moved into the design phase, beginning with wireframes to define the structure of the app. After refining these wireframes, I created interactive prototypes using Figma. This allowed me to simulate real user flows and test the usability of features before development began. Feedback from internal stakeholders and potential users helped refine the app’s functionality, ensuring it met the needs of both staff and consumers.

Hiring and Managing Developers

To bring the design to life, I hired and managed two developers to work on the app’s backend and frontend. I provided guidance on CSS styling and helped set up hosting and database environments to ensure smooth performance. As the project manager, I tracked each developer’s progress, assigned tasks based on priorities, and made sure the app was being developed according to the specifications I set out. Regular check-ins and using project management tools ensured the development stayed on track.

Testing and Event Launch

Testing the app was crucial before its first use at a large conference. I conducted extensive usability tests to ensure Devitrak could handle the real-time demands of tracking thousands of devices. The launch at the event was a huge success: all devices were accounted for, eliminating losses and damage. The app allowed for quick assignments of devices to consumers, keeping lines short and operations efficient. The event demonstrated the app’s ability to streamline device management and save the business substantial amounts of money. At the event I worked on taking notes, analyzing how consumers and staff used the app, and creating content for future marketing efforts.

Marketing and Launch

After the app’s success at the event, I worked on marketing Devitrak as a stand-alone tool. I developed a marketing plan targeting local businesses in need of a device-tracking solution. This included designing a marketing website, creating demo videos, and producing additional materials such as brochures and digital ads to generate interest. The goal was to build a strong, scalable brand presence for the app and help it reach potential users beyond just the event space.
